Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival

George Davidson

From Traves in Aberdeenshire this is Geroge's first time to Shetland.  He has won many competitions over the years including the last ever Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship in 2015

George Davidson says:

I am from Tarves in Aberdeenshire, and I started playing violin at 9 years old through school under Judi Nicholson (Judi Davidson). I soon developed a keen interest in playing traditional fiddle and after 8 months of playing, I was entered by my teacher into my first competition at the Banchory strathspey and reel festival, in which I was placed second.

Upon moving to secondary school at Meldrum Academy, I continued to be taught classical violin by Karen Harper, and achieved my grade 8 in November 2013. I also studied music as a subject, gaining an A at advanced higher in my final year of school (2014). During this time, I continued to increase my interest in traditional fiddle and competitions under the tuition and encouragement of Paul Anderson.

I have competed all over Scotland, with Junior success at various festivals such as Perth, Banchory, Oban, Aboyne, Kirriemuir and the NAAFC Mussleburgh. My first senior competition was the open class at Oban in 2012 at 15 years old, in which I was placed first and received an invite to the Masters competition the following year. Since then, I have enjoyed senior success at the same range of festivals, and the highlight of my journey so far has been winning the last ever Glenfiddich Fiddle championship in 2015.

I have, along with my younger brother Stuart, performed alongside Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain on numerous occasions.

I currently work full time as an electrician for SSE, in my final year of my apprenticeship, and this is my first time in Shetland!
